HENRIETTA, NY – Tobias Lindberg and Ryan Penny each scored twice and finished with an assist as the Binghamton Senators rolled to an 8-2 win over the Rochester Americans in Thursday’s preseason opener at the Gene Polisseni Center on the campus of RIT.
Joe Zarbo (1+1), Ryan Dzingel (1+1) and Spencer Humphries (0+2) also contributed two points for the visiting Senators while goaltender Chris Driedger stopped 23 of 25 shots he faced to earn the win in net.
Colin Jacobs and Justin Bailey each scored for the Amerks while Andrey Makarov and C.J. Motte combined to make 31 saves in the losing effort.
Ben Harpur opened the scoring for Binghamton just 5:45 into the contest when his shot from the point made its way through traffic and past a screened Makarov for a 1-0 lead. The goal came seconds after a clean face-off win by Daultan Leveille.
Lindberg put the visitors up by a pair less than three minutes later on a second-chance attempt from the top of the crease. After Humphries had his initial offering knocked down by Makarov, the rebound bounced squarely on the stick of Lindberg, who was there to knock it home for a 2-0 advantage in favor of the Senators.
A back-and-forth second period saw the two teams combine for five goals, beginning with Binghamton striking again midway through the frame thanks in part to an individual effort from Penny and a few fortuitous bounces. Penny started the play by attempting to skate the puck wide around a Rochester defender only to throw the puck on net as he neared the end boards. His shot would somehow find the left post and then carom off the back of Makarov before eventually trickling over the goal-line to put the Senators ahead 3-0.
Rochester answered just eight seconds later on the ensuing face-off after Jacobs accepted a long stretch pass from Goulakos and wristed one past Driedger to make it a 3-1 game.
The Senators restored their three-goal lead when Matthew Zay intercepted an errant clearing attempt from just inside the blueline before getting the better of an unsuspecting Makarov at 14:44.
Bailey brought the Amerks back within two at 17:59, but Lindberg would sweep in his second of the night with 45 seconds remaining in the period to send the Senators into the intermission leading 5-2.
Binghamton added three more goals in the third period, the first of which came 5:34 into the final frame when Zarbo converted on a breakaway opportunity. Dzingel widened the gap at 8:29 and Penny put the game away for good at 14:12 with his second tally of the night, capping a four-gal run for the Senators.
The same two teams will be in action again on Saturday, Oct. 3 when the two-game set shifts to the southern tier for one final tune-up at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Game time is slated for a 7:05 p.m. start.
