UTICA, NY – Gillies scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner, and rookie goaltender Andrey Makarov turned in a strong 31-save effort as the Rochester Americans officially punched their ticket to the 2014 Calder Cup Playoffs with a strong 4-1 win over the Utica Comets Wednesday night at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The win is the sixth in the last seven games for the Amerks, who stretch their point streak to seven straight games and improve to 36-27-6-5 heading into the final weekend of the 2013-14 regular season.
The Comets ended the season with a winning record and considering their dreadful start they finished strong. The commitment to the system put in place paid off in the end just not enough for a post season slot.
Given the state of Canucks hockey in Vancouver, the parent NHL club may not have the talent of some but they have a core of players who don’t quit.
